NABA Cares

NABA Cares is our national initiative to highlight the work of NABA members in the community.  Each year we partner with a local organization based near our annual convention site to give back to the community and show our appreciation to our host city.  Our goal is to show we care by touching each the communities where our members, stakeholders, and volunteers live and work.

NABA Cares - 2016 NABA National Convention Day of Service

This years' convention NABA Day of Service day of service will be hosted by the NABA Greater Miami chapter in support of Feeding South FloridaSaturday, June 25th from 7:45 am – 12:00 pm.
Feeding South Florida is the leading domestic hunger-relief organization in South Florida.  They rescue about 40 million pounds of food per year from farmers, grocers, retailers, etc. and bring it all to their main warehouse.  Food is then inspected and sorted by volunteers, then distributed to those in need in the communities.

Did You Know?

  • In the United State, 1 in 7 people struggles with hunger.
  • Food banks provide 3 million meals per year and are at the center of helping solve hunger among families, children & seniors.
  • There is estimated 70 billion pounds of food waste in America each year.
  • An estimated 25 – 40% of food grown, processed and transported in the US will never be consumed.
  • When food is disposed in a landfill it rots and becomes a significant source of methane - a potent greenhouse gas with 21 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide.
  • More food reaches landfills and incinerators than any other single material in municipal solid waste (MSW).

Now that you know, please help NABA and Feeding South Florida.  Feeding South Florida is always in need of volunteers to help sort all of the rescued food!

NABA Cares - National

In addition to our national initiative, many regions and chapters host, support or otherwise participate in a number of other charitable events.  While events vary by chapter, location and year, listed below is a sample of past events organized at the regional and chapter level:

  • “Holiday Party with a Purpose” (New York Chapter) – a portion of the proceeds went to the March of Dimes in memory of Jonah Daniel Lodge Bing. (Note: Donated funds were designated to go towards the New York City area and the Campaign for Black Babies managed by the National Birth Equity Collaborative.)
  • NABA New York’s Annual Day of Service (New York Chapter) – the chapter partners with a local charity to give back to the community.  The 2015 event was held in 7/25/15 in partnership with City Harvest, a food rescue organization dedicated to helping feed the nearly 1.4 million New Yorkers facing hunger.
  • VITA Programs (various chapters)
  • Florida Breast Cancer Foundation Fundraiser (Miami Chapter) – a fundraiser to bring awareness to the research foundation and to benefit The Florida Breast Cancer Foundation during breast cancer awareness month.
