Why Accounting?

Accounting is the basic language of business. Whether you are a star athlete, a restaurateur, or CEO of a Fortune 500 company, having a basic understanding of accounting and finance will equip you with the necessary tools to make sound business decisions. Accountants not only "keep the books" or do taxes, but they also serve as auditors, consultants, and valued business advisors.

Accounting and finance professionals are found in every industry from public accounting firms to nonprofit organizations to K-12 schools. Regardless of the industry you are interested in, accountants are ALWAYS needed.

Detailed below is an explanation of the various types of Accountants and Finance professionals.  However, as the needs of the local and global business market changes rapidly, so does the accounting needs of organizations.

Tax Accountants assess tax and financial planning opportunities, prepare tax returns and research tax issues.

Cost Accountants measure and allocate production and overhead costs.

Auditors attest to the fairness and reasonableness of financial statements after the analysis and inspection of supporting documentation.

Financial Analysts prepare budgets and forecasts to plan for the future and review operating results.

Management Accountants analyze costs, budgetary, forecasting, tax, and systems and procedures accounting functions. Supervisory duties and special reporting may be required.

Educators teach the theory and the practical aspects of accounting.

Internal Revenue Agents audit tax returns for compliance with tax laws that were in effect at the time the return was prepared.

Forensic Accountants investigate a party's finances to determine whether the reported income or assets is truthful and accurate.

Certified Public Accountants (CPA's) perform any and/or all of the above. In addition to passing the CPA examination, certain educational and experience requirements must be met.


Student Programs and Initiatives

The primary objective of ACAP is to increase the understanding of accounting and business career opportunities among high school students from underrepresented ethnic groups. Through ACAP's efforts, students have received educational enrichment experiences and practical help needed for college preparation and a career in accounting. 

ACAP began in 1980 when NABA recognized the need for a program that would direct African-Americans and other minorities towards the accounting and finance profession. Recognizing that preparation for a professional career begins in junior and senior high school, NABA designed a pilot program that would be informative, yet go beyond words. Accordingly, the one-week residency concept was developed.

During the week, students will have the opportunity to attend classes on careers in accounting and business, personal development and college preparation; tour college campuses, local companies, and CPA firms; and invite their parent(s) or guardian(s) to a banquet in commemoration of their completion of the program.

This fall will mark the launch of the third annual AFPI program.  AFPI is a two (2) and four (4) year high school program designed to provide inner-city youth with the opportunity to realize their full potential as future business leaders.  This program has increasingly challenging project levels designed to prepare at-risk inner city high school students for post-secondary education in the areas of accounting, business, and finance.

The primary goal of AFPI is to provide student participants with those specific tools needed to prepare for a post-secondary education in finance and accounting. Those tools include an introduction to the world of investing.

The High School Investment program is a significant component of the program, and is designed to enliven the approach to learning core academics, including math; and research has shown there is no better way to learn the importance of saving and investing.

This AFPI program component also teaches and reinforces the following essential skills and concepts:

  • Critical thinking
  • Decision-making
  • Cooperation and communication
  • Independent research
  • Saving and investing

Students use real internet research and news updates, making the simulation of investing an even better mirror of the real marketplace. While the competitive gameplay creates student excitement, the educational experience delivers the biggest impact.

Students who participate in the High School Investment program learn more than investing. As they progress, they learn core academic concepts and skills that can help them succeed in the classroom, and in life.

By participating in The High School Investment program, schools will find that attendance and dropout rates will be reduced. Students who participate in the program gain confidence and build self-esteem. They have fun and learn more effectively as they see how their classroom lessons apply to the real world.

NABA University is excited to share the progress of these programs, both new and established.  As we continue to work with regional leadership as well as the professional and student chapters, the NABA footprint will grow even larger and provide even more sustainable value for all of our members for years to come.  If you are not already involved with these programs, make sure you explore all of the available opportunities to enhance both your professional and personal development.



A Path to Membership after Graduation

It is your last year of undergraduate or graduate studies, or it soon will be. You have been involved with your NABA student chapter or you have just enjoyed as a NABA student member. So what’s next after graduation?

After graduation, professional membership is the next level of involvement. Transitioning from a student member to a professional member is easy and best of all, it’s free!

NABA's Student Case Study Competition was implemented in 1995 as a growing part of the student component of the Annual Convention. During the Competition, students are presented with an accounting-related issue that must be researched in order to develop a well-defined solution to the problem.

Organized in teams of 4-6 students, the group presents their findings to a panel of judges comprised of representatives from public accounting, corporate accounting, and academia. Winning teams receive a monetary award from sponsoring corporations and recognition in NABA’s publications.

NABA's Regional Student Conferences are its largest and most diverse annual student programs. They have allowed the Association to bring together hundreds of professional and student members, academia’s, and corporate representatives over the years. The goals and objectives of the Regional Student Conference generally complement those of its corporate supporters.

While the focus of the conferences rest primarily on career development and job placement, there are many opportunities to have fun as well. At the conferences, students can interview for internships and permanent positions, in addition to attending interactive sessions on topics such as: Developing Dynamic Interviewing Skills, Dress for Success, and Transitioning from College Student to Business Professional.
