The NABA Philly Chapter is calling for volunteers to assist in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.

What is it?
The VITA Program offers free tax help to low- to moderate-income (generally, $49,000 and below) people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Certified volunteers sponsored by various organizations receive training to help prepare basic tax returns in communities across the country.

Please note that there are roles available beyond tax preparation, such as greeting and administrative support.

VITA PROGRAM

Dear NABA Professionals and Students:

Every year, NABA participates in the VITA program (Voluntary Income Tax
Preparation) where we prepare tax returns for low to moderate income
earners, the elderly and the disabled.

Our site is located at the Myrtle Hilliard Davis Comprehensive Health
Center at 5471 Martin Luther King Blvd and we operate on Saturdays
during the months of February, March and a couple of weeks in April.

Six Good Reasons why you should volunteer with VITA through NABA:

1. Opportunity to give back to our community.  Directly or
indirectly, we've all been supported in some way by citizens in the
African-American community.  It's time to give back.

2. Personal Development such as learning current tax rules and how
to prepare various types of personal tax returns, learning to use
state-of-the-art tax software, improved communication skills resulting
from interaction with taxpayers, and improved time management skills.
This is a great opportunity to learn new skills.

3. Good for Resume.   Potential employers are impressed with VITA
volunteers.  They know that many of the skills needed to be a good
accountant are the same skills you polished when participating in VITA.
Along with being listed as a reference on applications, as Site
Coordinator I provide letters of recommendations for those seeking new
employment, those seeking promotions with current employer, and for
those applying to graduate programs.

4. Fellowship.   We work hard, but also take time to socialize and
have a little fun, including snacks and lunch on site.  You also get
access to a new social network of tax preparers.

5. Increased Self-Esteem from giving back to your community and
helping people file correct tax returns

6. Satisfaction of helping those in need.  We literally get
hundreds of compliments and words of appreciation every tax season.

There is no better reward.

If you have questions and/or would like to participate, please contact
Margaret Hines at mrhines@charter.net or call 314-432-7904.
